Controlling the electron transfer mechanism in metal–molecules–metal junctions

چکیده
We show how the mechanism of electron transfer through molecules can be switched between different regimes by using Hg-based metal–molecules–metal junctions. The junctions are easy to assemble and allow for hosting of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of a large variety of molecular structures. In this paper, we compare results from studies of charge transport across two different types of junctions. The first approach has been reported previously and involves the use of a two-electrode junction, Hg–SAM//SAM–Ag, to measure I–V c H a T s m t p w d

Experimental Approaches for Controlling Current Flowing through Metal-Molecule-Metal Junctions
Electron-transfer processes through molecular systems have attracted much attention over the past fifty years. The traditional experimental approach for studying these processes is based on measuring the electron-transfer rate in D–B– A supramolecular systems between electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) units that are covalently linked through a molecular bridge (B). In the late 1990s, a combina...
متن کاملMolecular electronics using diazonium-derived adlayers on carbon with Cu top contacts: critical analysis of metal oxides and filaments.
Evaporation of Cu metal onto thin (less than 5 nm) molecular layers bonded to conductive carbon substrates results in electronic junctions with an ensemble of molecules sandwiched between two conductors. The resulting devices have previously been characterized through analysis of current density-voltage (j-V) curves for several different molecular layers and as a function of layer thickness. Th...

Understanding and controlling electron transport through functional molecules are of primary importance to the development of molecular scale devices. In this work, the single molecule resistances of meso-to-meso ethyne-bridged (porphinato)zinc(II) structures (PZnn compounds), connected to gold electrodes via (4′-thiophenyl)ethynyl termini, are determined using scanning tunneling microscopy-bas...

متن کاملConductance and vibrational states of single-molecule junctions controlled by mechanical stretching and material variation.
The changes of molecular conformation, contact geometry, and metal-molecule bonding are revealed by inelastic-electron-tunneling spectroscopy measurements characterizing the molecular vibrational modes and the metal-phonon modes in alkanedithiol molecular junctions at low temperature. Combining inelastic-electron-tunneling spectroscopy with mechanical control and electrode material variation (A...
